A year-at-a-glance calendar earns its keep with size — it should be readable from across the room. The good news: printing big is easier and more affordable than most people assume, once you know what to ask for.
Pick your size
- A3 (297 × 420 mm) — fits a home printer if yours goes beyond A4. Good for a study or above a desk.
- A2 (420 × 594 mm) — the smallest size that reads well from a few steps away. Print-shop territory.
- A1 (594 × 841 mm) — a proper family wall calendar.
- A0 (841 × 1189 mm) — the full poster. Readable from across the kitchen; room to handwrite in every cell.

The counter to ask for: “plan printing”
Here's the trick most people don't know. Print shops usually have two counters for large sheets: poster printing (heavy photographic paper, priced for artwork) and plan printing (the service architects and builders use for large-format drawings, printed on lighter bond paper). For a working wall calendar — something you'll pin up, write on and replace next year — plan printing is usually the far more economical choice. Ask for “a colour plan print” at your size, hand over the PDF, and you're done.
If you want a gift-worthy version, the poster counter's heavier satin or matte stock is lovely — treat it as the premium option rather than the default.
Printing at home
A3-capable home printers handle the A3 file directly — print at 100% scale (“actual size,” not “fit to page”) so the dimensions stay true. For borderless printing, enable it in the driver; otherwise expect a small white margin, which the calendar's own paper-toned border makes graceful anyway.
Sewing-pattern shops: the quiet option
Online services that print A0 sewing patterns will happily print anything A0-sized and post it to you — worth a search for “A0 printing” plus your country if there's no print shop nearby.
